At Hatton by Design we want to make you the expert when it comes to diamond engagement rings. We've put together some handy tips and tricks to help you design the perfect ring for your partner. For those not in the know, we've got you covered...
We want to take the stress out of engagements by making the process as simple as possible. A great place to start is getting to grips with the engagement ring basics, so take a look at our handy guide to diamond engagement rings – pun only mildly intended.
If You Don’t Know Their Ring Size:
When it comes to rings, size matters. Not knowing your partner’s ring size is one of the biggest challenges you will face when it comes to buying a diamond ring – so we’ve compiled some useful tips on how to go about finding it out (and none of them involve you trying to tie string around her finger while she sleeps).
Ask her outright. There’s something to be said for hiding in plain sight and if she’s not expecting a proposal anytime soon, the question could go completely undetected. If she is expecting it, (and let’s face it - asking for the ring size is pretty big hint) this might not be the best route to take.
Get hold of a ring she already wears and find out the measurements from that. You could draw around it on a piece of paper and get the sizing. Alternatively, we have a ring sizing guide you can download and print to get an accurate measurement.
Phone a friend! If they have a friend that you know you could trust to keep your intentions secret, ask them to find out on your behalf. This also goes for family members – make use of that soon to be sister or brother-in-law.
If you’re still not sure, the average size of the ring finger is an M. Make up the ring to the average and if it’s too big or too small, we offer the first resizing free of charge!
If You’re Not Sure About Style:
Style is incredibly personal, so we understand that the pressure to pick the right engagement ring is rather high. Don’t panic! There are a few indicators that could lead you down the right path when making this decision. If you want to get a little more specific, we have an overall guide to buying a diamond engagement ring for you to explore the different ring and diamond styles.
What kind of clothes do they wear? Someone who wears classic shapes, neutral palettes and simple clothing would potentially be better suited to a classic solitaire ring. Someone with an old-fashioned style may want a diamond ring with a vintage look. If they’re all about making a statement with their clothes, and they enjoy being noticed, a halo style ring will be right on trend.
What is their other jewellery like? Get a feel for the jewellery they already wear and love. Have a look in the jewellery box and use it as a guide. At the very least, you should be able to determine if they’d prefer yellow gold or silver in colour. Do they wear a lot of glitzy or sparkly pieces? A diamond set ring or trilogy ring would be a smart choice.
Does your opinion count? Do they often look to you for advice on style choices, or ask you what you like to see them in? If so, a ring chosen specifically to your taste will be appreciated and may work out better than trying to second guess their tastes. Browse through our variety of rings and see what you get drawn to – sentimentality never goes out of style.
Still a little unsure? We’ve got your back.
At Hatton by Design we understand that choosing a ring is easier said than done. So, if you’re still at a loss as to what engagement ring to choose, we have a Plan B.
We can loan you a sample ring to pop the question with. If they love it – great news! We’ll get one made up to the specifications you need. If not, the two of you can come in and design the perfect ring together.
Let us know which sample you would want to borrow for the big moment, put down a £200 deposit, and once you’re ready to pick the real thing we’ll credit the £200 against your purchase. Otherwise, the deposit will be refunded once the sample ring has been returned.
Book in a meeting with us, let us know your plan in advance, and we’ll arrange a date in Hatton Gardens to view diamonds to suit your budget, together. With up to 70% saving against high street prices, diamonds hand picked by you, and a design you know they’ll love - this is the fool proof way of getting your engagement right.
